Earrings With Faces ~ Abstract Jewelry Trend 2022

People’s faces are a curious thing. In social media platforms,  there’s the norm of selfies and poses that hold a kind of monotonous similarities especially the ones seen in the fashion blogging spheres. It’s as if their faces are devoid of any telling emotions safe for a vague nonchalance. I’m guilty of this too at times but that’s because I’m attempting to diversity the facial pose compositions to include expressions without overt smiles. I tend to smile generally so I take advantage to break into a look of indifference when I’m posing for my own self portraits on Instagram and my personal blog. 

Faces in jewelry though? That’s something else altogether. Especially the abstract interpretations the kinds that are an extension of Picasso’s abstract face drawings. I love abstract faces in paintings and when they make a jump over into jewelry, it’s not hard to fall utterly in love with this particular niche in artistic jewelry. Like most with a love for face earrings, I have a pair of a dangling variety in gold that feature the most common of ‘face’ type: one eye winking and a facial expression that is hard to read. Most of us, in real life, hold a range of facial poses that can act as a mask to face the world, especially when in public. I hold a rather murderous one when I’m out walking in the park as a repellant against overly talkative persons. 

That being said, the main reason why these abstract face earrings appeal so much to me, at least, now that I took some time to think about it, is that they’re an enigma. You can decipher the facial expression any way you like but it’s just an approximation of what the designer/drawer originally had in mind. An abstract face has hidden sides to it and that is very interesting. You can  never quite grasp the feelings the face intends to convey. A smiley of the emoji variety cleans the rest of the vagueness out of the equation. An abstract one resides in the realm of possibilities.
