Our jewelry post shines the spotlight onto tusks as seen in necklaces. Find out the symbolism behind the tusk and our roundup of handmade necklaces that feature it as pendants.
By definition, a tusk is described as an elongated pointed tooth, usually one of a pair, extending outside of the mouth in certain animals such as the elephant, walrus or wild boar.
According to Alexander Hislop’s book entitled The Two Babylons, a tusk is simply a horn in the mouth. Symbolizing the power in the mouth, the tusk signifies the power of persuasion. The tusk is present in both Hinduism and Buddhism with the latter referring to elephant tusks that are considered as of the Seven Royal Emblem. Ganesha, the Hindu deity has only one tusk with the other one appears to be broken. This symbolizes wisdom that transcends duality.
A tusk pendant in a necklace though is obviously appealing in the aesthetic sense, are considered positive amulets as it draws from these positive attributes where tusks are considered a symbol of strength or someone with a strong character.
Should you find tusks as pendants attractive to you for some reason and would love to wear them as pendants in neckpieces that are minimalist in design, I hope you enjoy the selection below.
