Mom jeans are back on the scene! Surprise, surprise: Wonder how to ease this highly controversial denim pants style into your modern day wardrobe without looking sloppy? Read on.
Mom jeans hailed from the 80s era. To the long and arduous world of fashion, these jeans are considered a pretty young trend. Contrary to popular belief that the jeans belong to the mom breed, the high waisted relaxed fit denim style was actually worn by non-mom type like the cast of Beverly Hills 90210 who were all young and about to enter the complex world of adulthood.
If you’ve followed the popular show or clicked on the link above, you’d notice that the so-called mom jeans were also worn by the male species. Wikipedia needs to get updated when it states:
“Mom jeans is a humorously pejorative term for a specific type of fit of women’s jeans, considered to be both unfashionable, and unflattering to the wearer’s figure.”
While the trend might have been a complete fashion abomination during the mid-90s to the early 2000s where low-rise jeans rose and became the go-to denim style sported by young starlets Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera; in 2009 and 2010, both Jessica Simpson and Obama brought the mom jeans trend back into the spotlight of a much judgmental audience comprised of fashion snobs and critics who found the choice of denim revolting.
Fast forward to the early 2013, the mom jeans moved into a different track and were destined to be a hit. Brands like Topshop, ASOS and Urban Outfitters purposefully named their high waisted relaxed jeans ‘mom jeans’ and thus, the cycle of love-loathe-and-then-love of a particular trend progresses along the ephemeral fashion journey.
Combined with the spirit of standing out by blending in as reflected by the normcore fashion zeitgeist this year, I believe mom jeans fit right into this year’s minimalist mood.
