When I first laid eyes on the safety pin earrings worn by Johnny Depp as I was randomly reading about him online one evening, I thought: Wow, they look so Jack Sparrow or that perhaps Mr Depp is just expressing his carefree bohemian side or his personal stylist made him do it and he just wore them just because.

After finding these safety pin earrings on Etsy, I learned that there is a rich symbolism that lies behind the use of safety pins as a statement that traces back through time.

In short, safety pins are quietly a symbol of opposition to forms of injustices.

After the 2016 UK Brexit vote and the 2016 U.S. presidential election, safety pins were worn as a symbol of solidarity with groups of minorities who faced discrimination. The wearer of the safety pin – ( not just via earrings ) is identified as an ally to the people who are affected by sexism, racism, ableism and other forms of discrimination. Some dismiss this act of safety-pin-wearing as a form of ‘slacktivism’ but if it promotes real changes in people’s lives, then I would think otherwise.

Being someone who is sensitive to even the littlest of injustice that takes place around me, I feel rather motivated to wear some safety pins in the form of earrings even if it is the smallest gesture in kind one can make next to taking action.
