Skater dresses are reminiscent of the babydoll dresses of the 90s and ice-dance costumes.
The trend isn’t exactly new as it traces back to the 80s where the short dress derived its inspiration from the ice-dance costumes.
And naturally, that was how it came to be called as the skater dress. Check out how global fashionistas are wearing the skater dress in 2014 plus a few fashion tips!
So what makes a skater dress different from other dresses?
The dress has a trademark cut. It basically comes in fitted at the waistline and then skims over the hips and thighs in the way of a full circle skirt.
The length of the skirt is typically designed to fall mid-thigh and it’s splendid for those who love to show off some legs. However, the dress can also come with a longer hemline.
If you love twirling around in a dress/skirt, the skater dress will be the ultimate twirl-inducing dress.
Why is the skater dress so easily loved by many?
The cut of the dress is perfect for just about any body shapes. So it’s hard to hate something that’s amazing. If you’re apple-shaped, you can rock the trend. If you’re pear-shaped, you too can look good in the dress!
Bonus fashion point: Just make sure to get the right dress size for your body, nothing too loose or too tight. Pay close attention to how the waist of the dress falls onto your natural waistline.
For those who are blessed with wider hips, the twirly skirt cut may accentuate the size of your posterior to the point that it may not be too flattering. So to avoid this, please give the dress a try and a twirl before purchasing.
For hourglass-shaped gals, you’d be a fan for life as the skater dress will hug you gently around your curves making you look ultra feminine.
Malaysian humid and hot weather makes wearing the skater dress on its own a very practical thing to do.
You can layer it up with a blazer or a cardigan when you’re in a chilly indoor setting, but for the most part, it’s best to keep it all at a minimum. Accessorize to your liking.
The short skater dress can also be worn as a tunic top, so pair it up with your favorite leggings or skinnies.
Skinny belts can be utilized to offer a little bit structure to your getup and give it a more polished look.

I bought my first skater dress last Sunday. I didn’t even know it was a skater dress until I read the tag on it and looked it up online. I tried it on with my black leggings, and it’s so comfortable! I’m going to wear it to church this Sunday with a cardigan. I’m definitely buying more skater dresses :)
Good to hear that Ann! Skater dress does indeed has that comfy uber feminine flowy cut that makes it oh so wearable for just about any occasion. Dressy yet modest for church, I like that :)

Agree! I have several skater dresses and I have a straight/inverted triangle figure but it depends on the specific dress and the fabric it’s made from. Just because one skater dress might not look good on you, don’t give up! Try another one. There’s a skater dress for everyone! I’m coming out with a long sleeve stretch velvet skater dress in October 2017 that has looked fantastic on all of my fit models so far – especially Pear and Hourglass figures.
