Fashionista NOW: Prepping For The Preppy Fashion Trend

Preppy fashion has a modest and cultured history. Read on for a preppy approach in fashion.

Although today it is marketed as a trend that is easily to emulate by adorning the right selection of clean-cut structured clothing, back in the day, someone described as preppy actually had an attendance at a certain expensive privileged college and was likely a member of an exclusive circle consisted of the rich and influential.

The term preppy originates from the pre-college preparatory or prep schools that upper-middle-class White Anglo-Saxon Protestant children on the United States’ East Coast sometimes attend. [Fashion Encyclopedia]

Preppy fashion was catapulted into the mainstream in the 80s following a witty publication titled the Official Preppy Handbook by Lisa Birnbach that was written to poke fun at the lives of the rich and privileged.

Today’s preppy styles are embraced by many regardless of social class and are injected with the inclusion of modern elements but they still retain the air of impeccable quality derived from structured clean lines that will forever be a trademark.

What sets a preppy-fashioned type a part from the rest — besides the right external trappings — lies in the distinct cultured manner in the way that person carries herself.

[Some Preppy Fashion Tips To Keep In Mind]
– Classic preppy colors are usually muted earthy tones. An optional mix of soft pastels is permissible.
– Accessories are kept to a very minimum, are not chunky, tacky or too-out-there. Vintage and antique pieces are great.
– Choose clothing with a cut that flatters you without effort. Avoid baggy or too-tight pieces.
– Mix masculine structured designs with pieces with soft materials.
– Makeup is only worn to enhance natural beauty and not to overpower it.
– Trademark clothing for the preppy subculture include button down shirts, cotton chinos, structured blazer and shirt dress.
– Prints associated with the preppy fashion trend: Plaids, nautical lines and argyle patterns.
– Wear preppy Oxford shoes. No slippers/sandals please.
