Fashionista NOW: Bareback Backless Chic Fashion Inspiration

Bare your back with backless tops and dresses as you take on the heat in style this season.

We’ve witnessed a lot of cleavage-exposing but now is the season for our collective backs to shine under the spotlight and direct sunlight.

The backless trend in fashion started off in the 1920s where backless dresses first appeared. The style was then associated with the sun tanning trends of the 1930s stimulated by the need to show off a tan minus the presence of unsightly tan lines, which was a thing back in the West.

In the Eastern world, Bollywood celebrities are known to readily embrace the back-flaunting fashion trend. Not exactly new, the influences are evident in the style of the Indian women’s traditional clothing in which the choli or the fitted short blouse worn with a sari or ghagra is designed to expose the midriff area.

The return of the backless fashion trend this season is ultimately utilitarian to tolerate the escalating temperature. While it offers a nod to the past it is also reimagined with the modern world’s favorite shapes, textures, colors and silhouettes.

open back jumpsuit – H&M

This sexy open back jumpsuit featuring cross back straps is the picture of party in the back and business in the front. With a pop of neon and snake prints making appearance on Cassandra’s footwear of choice, the all-black look is instantly transformed.

vintage backless tank

A completely bareback tank like this is a superb summer staple but not for every bust size. The very open back of the loose top ensures an instant cooling off from the weather and also a quick suntanning treatment for your back.

So, what kind of bra should I wear with a backless top or dress?

For those with bust sizes A, B and C, do consider strapless stick-on bras, pasties, stick-on bras with convertible straps and wrap-around bra-converting straps. For those over size C, it is highly recommended that you wear strapless body suits or bustiers to ensure that you are well supported.

Although you can definitely opt to expose your bra straps while sporting a backless top as it is your prerogative, it can be unsightly to have a strap sticking out and taking down the effect of what is supposed to a bareback look. So, be sure to wear the right bra type!

black backless dress – Sheinside

When it comes to an open back dress that is held up by spaghetti straps, the combination of bra straps competing with the dainty straps from the dress (above) can minimize the sultry look that you are aiming for. Thus, it is best to consider non-traditional bras for the open back look.

open back dress – Chicnova

Uncomfortable with a total back exposure? Pick a dress that is held up by a racerback style strap rendered in black lace for an unexpected contrast and interest.

DIY low back top

A black top with a deep open back can be paired with denim overalls and thick boots for a contemporary look that is loved at the moment.
