Melinda Looi’s Chinese New Year 2015 collection is officially out for the taking, ladies! If retro with modern touches speak to your style preference, you will find our shopable designer picks right here a delight, we promise.
Launched on the 19th of January, you’ll be stoked to find that the talented homegrown designer, Melinda Looi (that I am very much in full admiration of) has chosen to stick to her easy minimalist design interpretation of the traditional Chinese wear.
Bye Bye Horse, Hello Rebellious Sheep!
The collection titled ‘Chun’ refers to the Spring Festival which is also known as the Lunar New Year. As we bid farewell to the year of the Horse and greet the Sheep come February 19th, ML’s CNY dress selection is all about standing out from the crowd which is interestingly a contrast to the Sheep’s natural inclination to remain with the herd.
When I first laid my eyes upon the dresses, I was awed by the body-friendly silhouettes and of course, the mandarin collars!
Classic Colors & Shapes of ML
True to ML’s penchant for the versatile color palette, her collection is built upon the classic color red as the annual go-to lucky hue and the more modern choices such as black, white, shades of gray and turquoise, sprinkled with accents of glowing yellow and teal.
For those who have seen what magic ML had cleverly conjured her ready-to-wear collection for Eid 2014 last year called emel by Melinda Looi collection, you will find this year’s CNY 2015 an equal heart-stealer (if not more) as it boasts of an eclectic selection that’s made for women who are comfortable with intermixing the past and the present while still anchoring their own brand of individualism.
Besides the cheongsam dresses, expect your hearts to flutter at the sight of retro shift-style silhouettes to the traditional wear, the use of abstract motif and mix patterns, peplum waist and an era’s past favorite swingy layered dress construction and even a collection for the beloved men in your lives.
