Fashionista NOW: The Sequin Trend – How To Rock It Without Looking Like A Disco Ball?

Sequins are dazzling little things that can make your outfit stand out and they’re a big thing this fashion season. While they’re considered very celebratory, sequined pieces can be worn for a casual and a semi formal day out as long as you know how to rock them well.

I admit not being a fan of glittery clothing for the sheer reason that I can’t see myself through all that glare. With the sun shining boldly on my face, I can’t imagine wearing something that will reflect the rays from the giant ball in the sun that my mere presence will blind unfortunate people who happen to pass by. I am a big exaggerator, of course.

Anyways, after looking through a number of fashion photos of fashionable young ladies rocking the sequins so tastefully that they almost look casual, I’ve decided to share a bit of fashion tricks on how to make sequins wearable for your day out.

Let’s jump straight into it, shall we?

Mix Sequins With Casuals

To make it wearable for a laid-back day out, it’s logical to pair your sequin shorts (above) with your favorite graphic/band tee and finish off with boots and accessorize to your liking.

Dazzling Up Top, Soft And Frilly Down Below

If you plan on wearing a sequined top, you have to ask yourself: what is the theme for the day-out look? Are you planning on just kicking it back with some friends in a low-key hang-out location? Or are you going out for a romantic date with someone special. The dramatic glittery top goes very well with the ultra feminine frilly skirt (above) if it’s for the latter.

And here’s another romantic casual sequin outfit idea by Mayo Wo. She organizes the rest of her pieces to complement the sequined vest that peeks out from under her pretty scalloped blazer.

Glam Up You Daytime Look With A Sequin Jacket

You know that wearing tees with jeans (or tanks and skinny jeans) has been done to death in this very chill contemporary world that we live in? Well, if you’re feeling like you could use a bit of a fashion boost, throw on some golden sequined jacket over your casual wear like Sietske (above).

And I highly recommend leaving your wrists, fingers and neckline devoid of visually-distracting jewelry. Keep the rest simple and let your jacket do its thing: stand out, flatter and glare.

Sequin Shy? Try Sequins As Accent

Sequins are sometimes feared by folks who like to just be free of glittery things, but if you’re willing to give them a go, why don’t you start small like Elle (above) and don a high neckline blouse that has a sequined collar instead. This way, you can play around with other colors in your outfit and still rock the sequin trend without looking over the top.

Bonus tip: When wearing a top or skirt/pants that are loaded with sequins, you would do well to pair it with neutrals. If you wear prints or a colourful piece along with a sparkly number you’ll create an optical illusion that can be overwhelming. By donning sequins with creams, blacks and greys you will balance out the drama and your outfit will look less visually-overloaded.

Sequins In Layers, Monochromatic & Muted Works The Best

Sequins are easily considered as ‘dressy’ and if you’re aiming for a casual sequin look, you’ve got to know how to take it down a notch, by mixing it up with some casual pieces. Tricia (above) is wearing a neutral creamy sequined top layered over a tiny sequin skirt and a pair of black liquid leggings. Sequined pieces can be rendered wearable if they are in neutral colors. The glam-casual vibe of her look is off the charts, don’t you think?

Cue in Kani’s Edgy Casual Sequined Look

If you can’t leave the house without wearing your grungy graphic tee, go ahead and cue in the edgy glam casual look that is worn by Kani. She indulges in a print-clash and tops it off with a sequined jacket. Sheer tights and wedges complete her dark look.

So what do you think of sequins, ladies? Do you fancy them and have you always enjoyed their sparkly vibe? Are these sequin looks wearable enough for you? Or do you think they’re best reserved for the night-out? Drop your thoughts down below.
