Another 90s trend to get under the watchful spotlight of the fashion organism and much hyped for the spring and summer seasons this year is the cami top.
Generally sported as a layering staple, the cami top is now donned by itself (with a complementary skirt/shorts/pants, course) as the fashion pack gets warm and sweaty come this time of the year.
Unlike the midriff-baring of the crop top that may be a challenge to wear, the cami top comes equipped with dainty straps for shoulder-and-back exposure that’s surely a heaven-sent on a scorching day.
Worn as the central piece of any casual-to-dressy wardrobe, the breed of cami tops of this season comes in a voracious variety of prints, colors and designs that will appease all style makers. For those with an affinity for crop tops, be very excited because the cami crop top variety is around to satisfy your midriff-baring obsession for days on end.
Lace and swing cami tops in particular are having a fashion moment with both styles to be easily incorporated as part of a laidback attire with frayed jeans or worked into a streamlined look teamed with a structured pencil skirt, blazer and pumps that can be worn for work or other dressy occasions.
If it’s humid where you are, a cami top is worth considering and here in Malaysia where bipolar humid weather reigns, the best fabric to sport is still and forever will be the breathable cotton.
With that said, how you choose to style your cami top lies perfectly within your own style inclination. Although the fashion industry works from a top-to-bottom standpoint, never let a trending fad get the best of you. Be selective, get experimental, be a fashion victim and then find your way back to a style that elevates and complements you as a person.
What is the point of wearing say, a destroyed pair of denim (the kind with huge gaping holes that are gigantic enough to severe the length of the whole jeans) just because other people are wearing it? To appear cool for the sake of keeping up with so-called temporary trends is the ultimate death of ‘cool’ as many have come to learn.
But if you’re already riding on the skirt of the 90s fashion trend revival and are loving it, I’d suggest starting with a neutral selection of camisoles that you most probably already have in possession.
