Feet rejoice! There’s a sandal trend in town that makes comfy on trend and casual-to-serious strolling possible again.
Fashionable or not, that’s for you to decide.
The fashion pack has long been the argumentative sort that it’s most futile to be in agreement on anything whatsoever, and birkenstocks in particular either get much love, hate or indifference. From me, total and unconditional LOVE!
If you’re in a spot where you’ve no idea what a birkenstock is, don’t worry, here’s a definition I got from trawling the internet like any modern cave woman:
A birkenstock is a type of shoe or sandal with a contoured cork-filled sole and a thick leather upper. It is also a brand of sandals and German shoes founded by Johann Birkenstock in 1774.
A century later, what was practically a family business had fueled the first historical progress in shoe design when Konrad Birkenstock, Johann’s grandson, became the first to develop the technique of insole bypassing to support the foot and this made birkenstock the first healthy shoe for walking.
Fast forward to today, where crazy high heels and stilettos — that veer more into the lethal and feet-killing weaponry — are adored and considered a prized possession by some, one has to wonder if the quest for vanity has completely outmaneuvered the practical appeal of mere comfort in wearing shoes that are designed to work with our bodies.
Now, if you wear flat shoes or made-for-walking type of sandals, you get a free backhanded compliment: oh, how very orthopedic chic!
Anyway, to be honest, I’ve only recently found out that this sandal type is called a birkenstock. In Malaysia, we just call it slippers. Got my first pair probably earlier this year or late last year and I admit the simplicity in design and fit won me over. Plus, my sister thought it worth an instant purchase because the cork-y look is so vintage looking.
But because it’s an imitation of the original birkenstock, I wouldn’t say I’m completely swooned by the sandals because as of now, the outsoles are practically frayed. I secretly refer to it as the distressed footwear style fit for hippies and hobos alike so that I don’t feel guilty for wearing them. Alright, I’ll invest in a genuine pair, I promise.
Design wise, as mine is in the gizeh thong style, I find it to be fitting for my broad and stubby-toed feet. I usually run from those dainty thong type of sandals but with the birkenstock’s gizeh style, my feet are quite happy and to my eyes, they look pretty darn good too.
Don’t you just hate footwear that makes your feet look ridiculous?
