Fashionista NOW: The Pussy Bow Is Back And It Isn’t What You Think It Is

It’s all about the pussy bow.

Bows worn in your hair are cute, quirky and all that. Bows on the neck of your blouses and dresses? Now, that’s retro and feminism all rolled up in one.

The pussy bow takes us to a period when women joined men in the workforce, unleashing a movement that frees women from the confining shackles of the gender-divisive times.

What exactly is a pussy bow? You may read the description once the chuckles are well over:

The pussy bow is a neckwear associated with women’s blouses and bodice, says Mr Wiki. It is also called the pussycat bow. It is in the form of a bow tied at the neck of a warm-blooded female human; a look that is also worn by adorable kitties, thereby explaining why it is called a pussy bow in the first place so you can give the giggles a rest.

The return of the pussy bow draws deep from the well the 1960s fashion (and also much long before that up to 1934!) where a bow is tied around the neck of power dressers of the time to retain a bit of a feminine touch in a work setting where women had to imitate the way their male counterpart dresses just to be taken seriously. Man Repeller showed how fun styling a pussy blow blouse could be in 2011 and Jezebel was beyond stoked for the pussy bow’s comeback in 2013.

This year, the pussy bow is back, mushrooming on blouses seen interestingly on the Gucci runway for men. The gender-bending twist is obviously done on purpose but predictably, the ladies are way more into the look, snagging pussy bow blouses off the men’s section.

On lookbook, a crop of fashionistas have already warmed up to the bow-tied look, fashioning a detachable bow over the neck of their blouses and dresses. It is a nod to an era long past, a very important time for women. So without further ado, enjoy the curated looks below:

“A woman plays such an active role in society. And today, the woman who influences fashion is not that very rich woman who sits at home and polishes her nails. It’s the one who works, who is a doer, who does things by dressing. She’s very strongly projecting an image of herself as an individual.”Oscar de la Renta
