Fashionista NOW: How To Style Your Cardigan This Monsoon Season?

Credit | Melike Gül

The cardigan is a monsoon wardrobe staple. Find how to style the cozy knit outerwear with various outfits and the trendy styles of cardigans that are out there.

The cardigan situation here in Malaysia is pretty intense. Everyone of any ages own at least 5 of the layering staple, worn alternately to weather the natural chill brought on by the current monsoon or the faux chill contributed by the air-conditioning system in buildings. A full-blown coat isn’t really obligatory here in the tropical nation as the cold temperature is often laced with sweat-releasing humidity.

While cardis get to be the brunt of jokes as they’re relegated as granpa’s staple in some places, in others – they make up a so-called hipster’s wardrobe, again in that eye-roll sort of a statement because apparently the cardigan-wearing needs to be immediately categorized for easier consumption. For many Malaysians though, a cardigan is whatever it needs to be and usually without any type of negative connotation, a functional piece of outerwear we slip into no matter the age just to get a bit of insulation in a breathable fabric.

As a fan of comfy cardis myself, you might have noticed that I’ve been yapping about them since 2011. These days, the long duster style cardigans have practically taken over the scene but as far as keeping comfy on days the sun’s a bit mellow, the knitted cardigan of a loose silhouette in a bright or muted color with or without the mélange effect still remains a favorite.

One of my black cardigans that I grabbed for really cheap at a thrift shop had an unexpected neckline that while it is in casual knit, from a distance, you could mistake it for a semi-formal outerwear even though it bears no distinct collar. A little detail like this does make me you see clothing in a fresh new way, truly.

On cool, lazy days where you’re aiming for the chic but slouchy look enveloped in a cocoon of warmth, shall we cue in the looks below to see the various cardigan styles available out there and ways to wear that involve all kinds of outfits?

CARDI LADY STYLE TIPS:

| Atsuna Matsui

Layer over a white blouse and slashed skinnies. The chunky knit introduces texture and a pop of color to get you out of the monsoon daze.

| Sarianna V.

Wear over a high-neck midi dress a black. Again, the chunky knit and even chunky buttons inject a textural vibe. Along with the boots, both elements help to dress the look down.

| Rosa

Texture, texture oh glorious texture. The cable oxblood knit has front pockets. Worn unbuttoned, over a white high-neck top and tartan skirt, this outfit just sings!

| Aleksandra L.

A thicker knit cardi with a long hem and melange fabric can be thrown over a jeans-and-shirt combo. High heels and bold red lips to dress up a comfortingly casual getup.

| Remi Afolabi

Use the cardigan as a way to introduce color in an otherwise neutral tee-and-jeans combo. The dark green color is of course, a no-brainer go-to for Autumn or the monsoon. Check out our muddy green coat picks here for inspiration, if you haven’t already.

| Lilia Uriostegui mojica

Who says you can’t show peeks of skin while clad in a cardi, eh? Lilia proves that a little strategizing applied in a wardrobe-coordination will give you a really cool end result. Sequins, shredded jeans and textures from the cardi make this outfit pop.

| Cami Nim

Layer over a high-neck crop top and skirt. Make the look sporty by slipping your feet into a pair of sneakers like Cami.

So ladies, which one of the look do you like best? What is your favorite cardigan style and how do you wear it in an outfit? Delight us with your thoughts – I reply to all!

“Knitwear can play a vital part in layering. The simplicity of a lightweight cardigan makes it one of the best ways to layer outfits. I love granddad cardis for winter, worn over a vintage lace shirt, waistcoat and full skirt with slouchy boots.”Twiggy
