Fashionista NOW: The Grunge Is Alive In Fashion

The grunge fashion descends from the grunge music genre of the late 80s to mid 90s. In fashion, looking grungy means to wear a look that brings out your inner punk. True grungers believe that if you don’t have any appreciation of the music and lifestyle of the original grunge trendsetters – you should not try the look at all.

Don’t fret; the inspiration should come easy if you have a wild punk in you that wants to come out and play.

Here’s a piece on some ground ideas that can aid in giving birth to the grunge fashion in your style.

Messy/Natural looking Hair

A true grunge does not waste time worrying about how his/her hair looks like or even care to read this piece. It’s all about not caring what the world has to say, but going with what you feel is right.

Anyways, back to the topic of the grungy hair, I’d say go for the natural wind-blown hair or that tousled look right after you wake up.

And of course you can dye your hair. You can color your hair into whatever colors that suit your fancy and then let your roots grow for at least up to three inches. Why? Well it’s because most grunge folks are just too busy or too poor to go for the regular hair roots touch-up.

It was/is still common to see grungers looking “unkempt” and it is your fashion right to look like that too!

Go Flannel Shirts

Flannel shirts are associated with the grunge style because of the grunge music that became a popular pop culture in the 90s most specifically in Seattle – a style that was then boosted by a number of grunge music icons from the early-mid 90s. Since then the flannel has been trademarked as a fashion statement.

Besides going flannel, you can wear any kind of shirts or Henley tops that you’re comfortable with, making sure the colors are not too bold or bright. You can wear blacks, browns and faded colors of greens, purples, oranges and blues.

Get the Jacket On, Man.

Being grungy is also about layers. Just like the bohemian, the grunge wears a shirt, and then something over it like a black leather jacket, or a cardigan, or a zip-up hoodie. This could be due to being practical because of the cold weather in Seattle, but who says you can’t rock the layers in the monsoon of the equator right here in Malaysia?

Jeans Oh Jeans

Ripped jeans are popular in the grunge fashion, but you can still wear the un-ripped ones too, in my honest opinion. Since we are mixing up old style with the new elements of today, a little room for fashion innovation does not kill the grunge – I hope.

Baggy jeans and clothing are also common in the grunge fashion world – so don’t be afraid to rock them grandmother pants to your heart’s desire.

Don’t Over-accessorize!

Wear those leathery dangly bangles or the beanie hats or the scarfs if you must but please don’t go overboard. The grunge does not splurge on these things – just get some tattoos and piercings from the free-tattoo parlor instead.

Lastly, don’t be a poser, eh?

In the words of the grunge Lord Kurt Cobain, “wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are” and he’s Right!

The grunge style in essence was/is very much anti-fashion and was/is influenced much by the attitudes of angst and apathy towards the conventional establishment of society and culture and music was/is the way of life that it strongly lived/lives for.

With that in mind, the ideas shared in this article are just that – plain ideas. Use them but remember that complete imitation is not grunge at all.

So, do you like the grunge style? Feel free to share your views with us :)
